Photos: Angry Arik Air passengers block Abuja airport runway

Angry passengers yesterday evening Thursday
September 26th blocked the runway of the
Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja,
preventing planes from taking-off or landing.
The passengers, who disembarked from an
Arik Air flight, blocked the Abuja runway
because the flight they took from Abuja to
Calabar was not allowed to land in Calabar
around 5.30pm for safety reasons - the
runway lightening was poor, forcing the pilot
to return the passengers to Abuja.
The passengers now felt the best way to
express their anger was to prevent other
planes from taking off or landing at the Abuja
airport. Continue...
Arik Air spokesperson, Mr. Adebanji Ola, said
that it was not the airline's fault that the
Calabar airport was closed by the time the
flight from Abuja got there.
He said,
“The flight was delayed because there
was Very Important Personality
movement and there was also some
weather issues, it is not the fault of the
airline that the plane could not land
there. We are amazed that despite the
security at the Abuja airport, passengers
were still able to hijack the aircraft and
hold other planes to ransom, that should
not be the case.”

Crippled Man Jailed In Kirikiri Prison For Raping A Bread Seller

According to PM news man, Kundus Kazeem has
been arrested for allegedly raping a 19-year-old
bread seller at his home in Ajegunle, Lagos.
Kazeem who claims he had a fee agreement with
the bread seller has been charged before an
Apapa Magistrate’s court.
He is now facing a two-count charge of felony
and r*pe under the Criminal Code, Laws of
Lagos State.
The suspect allegedly lured the victim into his
one room apartment at Cemetery Road, Ajegunle
and with the aid of a walking stick, forcefully
had carnal knowledge of her.
The 29-year old Kazeem who admitted that
women reject him because of his physical
condition, said nothing was wrong him except
his two legs.
He also claimed he slept with her after they
agreed on a fee and regretted that he was not
able to meet the initial condition she gave him.
Kazeem told P.M .NEWS that he did not rape the
teenager as she claimed.
He said before they went to his room, they
agreed that he will pay N1,000 for the act and
that he used part of the money he had on him
to entertain her by buying drinks for her and
himself, after which he gave her N400.
He said she became angry and went and told her
parents that he raped her.
Contrary to his claim of bargaining with her,
P.M.NEWS gathered that Kazeem asked the
victim to come to his room and sell bread to
him.
She did not suspect anything and took the bread
to him and when she entered his room, he
locked his door and threw her on his bed and
used his walking stick to tie her hands, tore her
pant and raped her.
The victim went home and told her parents what
happened and the matter was reported to the
police and he was arrested and charged to court
for the alleged offence.
When the charge was read to him, he pleaded
not guilty. The presiding Magistrate, Mr M.K.O.
Fadeyi granted him bail in the sum of N500,000
with two sureties in like sum.
He was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri
pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.

I've had sex with 4 men, is that too much for an 18 year old?

I am 18 years old and in my second year
in a private university. I started having
sex when I turned 16 after leaving
secondary school and I have had four
sexual partners so far. I dated 2 of the
boys while the other 2 were just flings.
Recently I confided in a friend the
number of men I've been with and I
later saw text exchanges between her
and another mutual friend of ours
laughing at me and criticizing me. They
called me all sorts of names including
wayward and loose. I've been with only
four men, is that too much for a girl my
age? I thought it was the norm so why
are my friends condemning me and
passing the info around?
Four sexual partners at 18? That's waaaay too
much! My opinion. What do you guys think?

ASUU vows to continue strike, blames NUC boss for rot in Nigerian universities

ASUU has been on strike for about 3 months.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) has blamed the rot in the Nigerian
university system on the Executive Secretary of
the National University Commission, Julius
Okojie, saying his failure to insist on quality
has bastardised Nigerian universities.
The lecturers also vowed to continue their
strike unless the federal government honours
the 2009 agreement it had with the union.
In a statement signed by its University of
Ibadan branch chairman, Olusegun Ajiboye,
ASUU renewed its call for the scraping or a
total overhaul of the regulatory institution if
the nation wishes to get it right in university
education management.
While calling on the National Assembly to
beam its searchlight on the activities of the
NUC, Mr. Ajiboye said the recent NEEDS
assessment report on universities reflects how
much the commission has failed in its duties as
a regulator.
According to him, the report undertaken by
genuine academics contradicts NUC’s
accreditation exercises which gave
‘controversial’ clean bill of health to most
universities through “magomago accreditation.”
The union contended that only in a society like
Nigeria would Mr. Okojie still remain in office
after being heavily indicted in the report,
saying “in sane climes, the NUC boss ought to
have resigned through the revelations made in
the NEEDS assessment report.”
Mr. Okojie had, last week, absorbed his
commission of any wrongdoing in the rot
plaguing public universities in the country,
particularly as regards undeserved
accreditation, blaming members of the ASUU
instead.
Mr. Ajiboye, who described the statement
credited to the NUC boss as ‘careless’, accused
Mr. Okojie of using his cronies who can do his
biddings to embark on accreditation.
He said the success of the 2011 elections was
based on the patriotic zeal and contributions
of genuine and patriotic ASUU members
nationwide saying that was why the election
was free of hanky-panky recorded in past
elections.
The ASUU statement titled ‘Where Okojie Got It
Wrong,’ insisted that the NUC boss is fond of
using his ‘yes sir’ boys to do hatchet jobs
during accreditations, thereby compromising
quality most of the time.
The union said its almost three-month-old
strike is fully on, adding that the it would not
allow itself to be fooled again with ‘promisory
notes’ of the federal government which had
never worked in the past.
“ASUU cannot be blamed for NUC ‘magomago’
accreditations. Rather than blaming the Union,
Okojie should take full responsibility for all
the fraudulent deeds in the NUC, including the
work and eat accreditations.
“The NUC knows the kind of academics they
select for their ignoble exercises. These are
cronnies of the big man in the NUC. They can
never say no to his biddings. Nigerians should
be proud of ASUU in it’s efforts at
repositioning public universities in the
country. One of these major efforts is the
NEEDS Assessment Document.
“This was a product of a rigorous academic
exercise carried out by dependable and
credible members of our Union. Unlike the
numerous faulty accreditation reports which
had given these universities clean bill of health,
the NEEDS Assessment Report stands out as a
classical document of reference detailing the
rot and decay in public universities in Nigeria.
All well meaning Nigerians can see the contrast
between okojie’s ‘packaged accreditation
reports’ and a credible job done by ASUU.
“It has become very clear from the Needs
Assessment that Okojie and his cohort of
accreditors have fooled this country for too
long. Enough they say is enough. Time is now
for the Government to beam a searchlight on
the activities of the NUC.
“The Education Committees in both the Senate
and House of Representatives have an arduous
task to do here. Nigerians are calling for
dismantling of an omnibus body that has done
the country more harm than good. NUC must
go.
“Professor Julius Okojie cannot absolve himself
from the rot in the university system by
regulating quantity instead of ensuring quality
delivery,” ASUU said.

F AMILY OF BOY BORN WITHOUT A PENIS BEG FOR HELP

Born in March 2003,13-year
Old Uchenna Ekezie has no
penis. Uchenna Ejike has lived
with what is described in
medical parlance as ‘MALDER
DEVELOPED’ external
genitalia. The young boy has
no external male reproductive
organ.
Uchenna can not urinate
normally and certainly,there’s
no hope he will father a child
if his present condition
remain
unsolved.
UcheNna hails from
Umuariam Obowo local
government area of Imo State.
Nigerian FM was told that this
young man has undergone
many surgeries to correct this
terrible condition.
The first surgery was to help
for correction of the a
continous dripping of
Urine,while a second surgery
was performed for the
elongation of the rudimentary
stump.
The first attempt to to correct
the birth defect, Uchenna
suffered further damage in
certain veins and arteries
around his genital area.
A medical evaluation by an
IndianHospital in Abuja sent
to FortisEscortsHospital, New
delhi, India, from the
Department of Surgery,
Federal Medical Centre,
QueenElizabethHospital,
Umuahia, explained that
Uchenna had the first surgery
eight days after birth.
In the report, signed by Dr.
E.N. Agwu on behalf of Dr.
G.U. Ugbam, the Chief
Consultatnt Paediatric
Surgeon, the procedure,
known as posterior iliac
osteotomy, was followed by
the repair of the exomphalons
at two months of age, and
followed to months later by
repair of epispadias.
At four months of age,
Uchenna had a herniotomy
and bladder augmentation at
six months. All surgeries wer
carried out at the FMC,
Umuahia. Uchenna’s father,
Celestine, told Good Health
Weekly that efforts to seek
financial assistance from the
ImoState government has not
yielded fruit.
Speaking through the Queen of
Peace Catholic Church,
Umuariam, Obowo, LGA,
Celestine observed that an
estimated bill of $12,000
(about N2 million) has been
issued by the hospital for the
corrective surgery, but
observed that an additional
N2.5 million was being sought
to cover medicals, return
tickets, evaluations, tests and
post surgeries and
rehabilitation.
The Indian hospital is all set
to correct this abnormality
and restore Uchenna’s
external genitalia to normal,
but the obvious financial
constraint is a stumbling
block. Lamenting his son’s
plight, Celestine appealed for
urgent financial assiatance to
enable the life-saving
surgeries to commence.
“We have no kobo or even a
fraction of this amount.
Already we have spent all we
have on his treatment and the
family is broke. I even had to
sell off all the cement bocks I
moulded to build about four
rooms, as well as the old car I
was managing to provide for
my family. We are now
completely dependent on the
response of generous
Nigerians to out plea. Please
help provide Uchenna with a
better quality of life and offer
us hope in humanity.”

DJ Switch wins Glo X Factor!! Takes home 24 million Naira

The 29-year-old geology graduate of the
University of Port Harcourt and native of Udi,
Enugu State, was declared winner at the
grand finale of the show held at Dream
Studios, Bamako Street, Omole, Lagos. She
beat the two other finalists Ethel Eshun and
Vicky Gomoti in the last round of voting to
win Globacom’s N24 million cash prize and a
recording contract with Sony Music.
Continue...
B efore the announcement of the results, the
expectation of audience, judges and
contestants alike had built to a crescendo as
everybody waited anxiously to find out who
the first X Factor winner in Africa
would be.
The suspense was to last even longer as Glo
ambassador from Ghana, Efya, came on stage
for a wonderful performance that had the
audience applauding rapturously. After her
performance, X Factor host, Toolz, turned to
the judges and sought to know how they felt
about the night.
Reggie answered first, “I’m so excited that I
brought my wife with me so we can both be
excited together. It’s been a beautiful
journey; I can’t wait to see who will walk
away with the money.”
According to MI, “It’s been incredible. The
crew, my fellow judges and the contestants
have all been wonderful.”
Toolz asked Onyeka, “Who do you think will
be the winner tonight?”
Onyeka answered with a smile, “I was so
excited, I brought my Bible along with me. At
this stage, I think the last three contestants
have all won.”
Shortly afterwards, 2008 UK X Factor winner,
delectable Alexandra Burke, got the hall on
its feet with a resounding applause for a great
performance of her hit track, Halleluyah. She
was later joined on stage
by the three finalists, DJ Switch, Eshun and
Vicky as they all spectacularly chorused the
song together.
“Shake” and “Ada Ada” crooner, Flavour, came
onstage next to thrill guests with a
scintillating performance. He proved why he
was a crowd favourite as the audience rose to
their feet to dance along with him. After
Flavour’s performance, the contestants came
out to sing the songs they sang at the
audition stage.
Vicky led the performances, and she got a
standing ovation from the three judges. “How
did your daughter perform?” Toolz inquired
of Onyeka. “She has grown from a pupa to a
butterfly. She sang with confidence and inner
joy. I had goose pimples just listening to her.
I have no doubt that she’ll make it. May God
bless you.”
Reggie added, “You just proved to us that our
work has not been in vain,” while MI said,
“Wow, Vicky is just so amazing. You are
absolutely stunning. The way you’re radiating
joy; don’t keep it to yourself, please, share it
with the world.”
DJ Switch came up next, garbed in a tight
black trouser with black top to match. Her
entry engendered a boisterous response from
the crowd with her performance of Jay Z’s
“Forever Young,” which was heavily
spiced up with raps. In a mild drama, the
contestant switched over backwards,
precariously clutching the mic as she raps.
Her stagecraft even drew a wider applause
when she stepped down the stage to hug her
mother, while still singing without losing
concentration.
Reacting to her performance, MI said,
“Switch, people scream when you perform
because you inspire us all. When you came
for the audition, I felt you tried. I had
already made up my mind that you wouldn’t
make
it to my final three mentees, but you changed
my mind. Everybody here needs to know that
no matter what people say about you, it
doesn’t matter as long as you fight.” he
concluded. Reggie gushed, “DJ Switch, you are
inspirational; you excite me. My children love
you; everybody loves you!” As for Onyeka,
she opined, “Unlike the other judges, the
moment you stepped on stage, I knew you
had it.”
When asked why she should win the X Factor,
Switch simply said: “I work hard; I pray
hard.”
Eshun was the next to perform, and she
pulled out all the stops as she shimmered in
her green attire. “One of the best things on
this program is that I got to mentor Vicky and
Eshun. She is exquisite, beautiful, gorgeous
and talented. She walks onto the stage and
lights it up. You have something that is very
special. No matter what happens here,
youhave me permanently in your camp. You
will take the world by storm!” Onyeka
declared.
MI said, “You are a perfect example of what
this show is all about. You epitomises
everything X Factor stands for. You’ve been
one of my favourites.” Her Ghanaian
compatriot, Reggie, said, “My story with my
sister is different. We come from the same
place and people expect me to give her a
pass. It often seems as if I’m tough on you,
but look at where you stand now. You have
done well!”
On why she thinks she should win the
competition, Eshun said, “The potter in the
Bible goes around looking for clay to mold
them into the type of pots that he wants. X
Factor came looking for me; found me and I
am glad. These past weeks, I have gone
through moulding, and now, I’m ready.”
Then the climax! The contestants held hands
together as they anticipated the results that
would change the lives of one of them
forever.
As Toolz invited the representative from
Alexandra Forbes to the stage, she lingered a
bit, teasing the audience as she twirled the
green envelope containing the results in her
hands.
“The first winner of the Glo X Factor West
Africa is DJ Switch!” she announced as the
crowd erupted in jubilation.
“How do you feel?” Toolz asked Eshum. She
answered, “Fortunately, the Lord did what He
wanted to do, and I’m happy for that.”
Vicky said, “I want to thank Glo for this
platform, and I think DJ Switch deserved to
win.”
Thereafter, DJ Switch performed her single,
“Safe Landing” which is billed for release next
week.
The first runner-up was Eshun and she got
the sum of N1m for her efforts, while Vicky,
the second runner-up, also got N1m.

It’s Official! BBM Now Available On Android, iOS To Follow In Hours

The BBM for Android app has officially
launched today, with BlackBerry confirming
earlier the messaging service will hit the
Google Play Store at midday(GMT).
Formally confirmed at BlackBerry Live back
in May, the BBM for Android app has been a
long time coming, pushing its promised
summer arrival to its very limits in landing
today, September 21.
“BBM for Android will be available at 12 pm
on Saturday 21,” an official statement from
the company confirmed in the run up to the
launch.
The BBM Android app will be available as a
free download and allow users to chat for
free with follow BBM users across all
platforms. The first time BBM will have been
made available to none BlackBerry handset
users, the BBM Android app will precede the
BBM iOS app by a matter of hours, with the
iPhone bound iteration to be rolled out just
after midnight.
A launch that is likely to be clouded by other
goings on at the company, the BBM Android
app release comes in the wake of a fresh
round of losses and job cuts at the Canadian
based BlackBerry. Having reported
anticipated Q2 losses of almost $1 billion,
BlackBerry has confirmed that it is to cut
4,500 jobs globally, an announcement which
has seen a 17 per cent drop in its share
prices, in a single.
“We are implementing the difficult, but
necessary operational changes announced
today to address our position in a maturing
and more competitive industry, and to drive
the company toward profitability,” a
statement from BlackBerry CEO Thorstein
Heins stated yesterday. He added: “Going
forward, we plan to refocus our offering on
our end-to-end solution of hardware,
software and services for enterprises and the
productive, professional end user.”
Despite the hard times the Canadian company
is currently in, opinions in several quarters
have lauded its initiative at offering BBM on
other platforms, noting that chat applications
like Whatsapp were already phasing BBM out.
It’s emergence on the now reigning android
OS, they say, would mean Blackberry does
not lose out totally on its customers, and yet
still have a fair share of those who wouldn’t
use a Blackberry smartphone on a good day
but would use the BBM since it’s available at
no extra cost.
BBM can be downloaded from September 21
and September 22 for Android smartphones
and iPhones, respectively.
